Gigantochloa apus, also known as Tali Bamboo or String Bamboo, is a medium-sized, thick-walled bamboo species native to Java, Indonesia. This strong, construction-grade bamboo is often used for scaffolding and as a building material for bridges.

Uses

• Tali bamboo poles are quite straight, with a slight taper.
• Compared to other bamboo species, Tali bamboo poles have a porous outer layer, which makes it easy to apply paints or varnishes if desired. No scraping or sanding is required.
• Gigantochloa apus is a medium-sized, extremely strong and durable bamboo species. The strength properties of this species were tested in air-dry conditions (MC 15,1%), yielding the following results. Average MOR: 87,5 N / mm², maximum crushing stress ranging between 27,29 – 48,64 kN / mm². Average tensile strength was 298,9 kN / mm². Average shear strength ranged between 7,47 – 7,65 kN / mm².
• These bamboo poles are treated with borax after harvesting to prevent possible powder-post beetle infestation.

General use

• The economically most important bamboo in Java, especially in the handicraft and furniture industries.
• Tali bamboo is often used for building materials such as roofs, scaffolding, bridges, walls, fences, etc.
• Gigantochloa apus is known by most Indonesians as Tali Bamboo (‘Tali’ means rope), as it is an excellent bamboo for making strong strips with flexible skin.

General properties of bamboo poles:

• The diameter of each bamboo pole varies. Our average diameters are always measured from the base (or the thickest point of the bamboo pole).
• It is a natural characteristic of bamboo poles that they are thicker at the base than at the top. The percentage taper of Tali bamboo poles is approximately 10–15% over a length of 3 metres.
• Bamboo is a natural product, so bamboo poles are never 100% straight.
• Every bamboo pole is unique, so colour differences can be expected.
• Vertical cracks may occur in bamboo poles, especially when used outdoors. Like wood, bamboo also expands or shrinks as temperature or humidity conditions change. However, these cracks do not affect the structural integrity of the bamboo.
• Bamboo used outdoors will weather over time. We recommend treating the bamboo with Bamboo Booster or Bamboo Protector to preserve its natural colour.
